Originally written by Mike d’Abo (at the time the singer for Manfred Mann), this song has had several notable incarnations. The first version, recorded by Chris Farlowe and produced by d’Abo, was a minor hit in the UK. Rod Stewart recorded his version, which was arranged by d’Abo and features the songwriter on the piano, in 1969, but it wasn’t a real success until it was reissued in 1972.
The song saw a resurgence in the early 2000s when a version arranged by Big George Webley and featuring Fin Muir on vocals was used as the theme song for the original UK version of “The Office.”
