Bareilles wrote this song with Jack Antonoff (of the band Fun.) for a friend who had recently come out as gay. Bareilles reportedly asked producer Mark Endert to make it sound as radio-friendly as possible. When Katy Perry’s “Roar” came out just months later, many Bareilles fans accused Perry of plagiarism, though Bareilles herself has never said so. Oddly enough, the controversy only served to boost the popularity of “Brave.”
