“Born in the U.S.A.” features a very repetitive and simple piano part that spans a wide range on the keyboard and is more or less the same from start to finish, but despite its musical simplicity, the song itself goes much deeper. While on the surface it might sound like a patriotic anthem about the United States, the verses describe the struggles faced by a Vietnam War veteran who has returned home after the war in search of work and belonging. Bruce Springsteen spent years trying to write a ‘Vietnam Song’ after performing at a veterans event in 1981 and he finally penned and released this classic in 1984, deciding that despite it’s darker origins, it still deserved his signature iconic, triumphant delivery.
