You might know “Por una Cabeza” from famous movies like Scent of a Woman, Schindler’s List or True Lies, but the catchy tango was written well before the advent of color film. Carlos Gardel wrote the music in 1935 with lyrics by Alfredo Le Pera that describe an attraction to women with an obsession with horse racing. Interesting comparison until you realize that ‘por una cabeza’ is actually a common Spanish phrase that describes a horse winning a race by the length of its head. I love this tango – a simple AB form that alternates between a cute, bouncy melody in A Major and a dark sappy melody in A Minor. Enjoy the lesson!
