This song has been covered by many artists, including Taylor Swift, Ashley Tisdale, Coldplay, The xx, the cast of Glee, and Jimmy Eat World. Despite its immense popularity, Wham!’s original version didn’t chart until just after George Michael’s death on Christmas Day, 2016.

According to Songfacts, an Austrian radio DJ named Joe Kohlhofer used the song in December of 2015 to “protest” a perceived lack of local Christmas spirit. He supposedly barricaded himself in his booth and played the song on loop for almost two hours, only stopping because his young daughter called him and said she didn’t like the song.
