Collins was approached by director Taylor Hackford to write a theme for the movie “Against All Odds.” Collins turned to an unfinished demo, originally given the working title “How Can You Just Sit There?” that had been created during the writing period for his first solo album. When he’d finished reworking it, he had the full song, which he now called “Take A Look At Me Now.” According to Collins’s autobiography “Not Dead Yet,” Hackford demanded that the title be “Against All Odds,” and that those words exactly be worked into the lyrics.
